In 1603, James  I became King of England. He exercised absolute power and tried to control religion. During his reign (1603-1625), many puritans were persecuted. Some fled to avoid persecution.
  In 1620, 102 Puritans sailed on the "May Flower" to the new America. They sailed from Plymouth. After a 65-day-journey, they arrived somewhere near Cape Cod and decided to settle a little farther on. The place was named in memory of their place of departure, Plymouth.

  The early settlers in America included not only thoses who wanted to escape religious persecution but also those seeking adventure and new farmlands. Besides, there were unemployed artisans and contracted slaves.

  From the early 17th century to the mid 18th century, England established 13 colonies in America which stretched from the atlantic to the Appalachian Mountains.
